"Interventional Treatments in Psychiatry"

Alexander Cole, M.D.
Zale-Lipshy Pavilion - Clements University Hospital
Assistant Professor,  UT Southwestern Medical Center

Description:

Interventional treatments in psychiatry - including repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, ketamine-based treatments, and, in particular, electroconvulsive therapy - are among the most effective treatments utilized in psychiatric practice, particularly in depressive symptomatology. However, these treatments are thought to be underutilized in the care of psychiatric patients; factors thought to contribute to this gap include lack of access, cost, administrative barriers (e.g., payer-based coverage criteria), and stigma. In this lecture, we will review the indications for clinically-available interventional treatments with a focus on the risks, benefits, outcomes, and administration of the treatments themselves. Experimental treatments - including magnetic seizure therapy and off-label indications for interventional treatments - will also be briefly reviewed.

Objectives:

1) Describe the indications for and the neurobiological underpinnings of psychiatric disease that form the target of interventional treatments including repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), ketamine-based treatment, and electroconvulsive therapy,  in psychiatric practice

2) Describe how interventional treatments are administered and describe the risks, benefits, and outcomes of each treatment for specific psychiatric indications. Utilize this understanding in order to better inform the clinical care of patients, including appropriate referrals for treatment-resistant depression treatment.
