Workshop Description:
Have you ever been unable to transfer your patient to a state hospital because it was full? Or wondered what happens to mentally ill patients in the justice system? Have you been looking for ways to better advocate for patients involved with the justice system? During this workshop, we will define what it means to be competent to stand trial and discuss competency to stand trial evaluation and restoration processes in Dallas County. We will also describe treatment barriers faced by individuals found incompetent to stand trial, and conclude by discussing ways that the general psychiatrists can advocate to improve systems of care for justice-involved individuals. By the end of the workshop, psychiatrists will have the knowledge and tools to advocate for better systems of care for justice-involved individuals.
Learning Objectives:
1) Define what it means to be (in)competent to stand trial
2) Summarize treatment barriers faced by those incompetent to stand trial
3) Describe ways to advocate for justice-involved individuals in Dallas County
Presenter:
Dr. Baker is Board Certified in both general adult Psychiatry and in Forensic Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at UT Southwestern Medical Center and works as an outpatient Psychiatrist at the Parkland Behavioral Health Center. She also accepts forensic psychiatry casework and is affiliated with the Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute.
