Workshop Description:
Erectile Dysfunction is a common problem for men and can create individual and relationship problems. Being a profession in medicine that patients trust to discuss highly personal matters, psychiatrists should be well suited to address both the medical and psychological components of this disorder clinically. However, psychiatrists typically receive very little training on sexual health during residency training and are often reluctant to ask about ED or to discuss causes and treatments of ED with their patients. During this workshop, we will highlight the relevance of ED to psychiatrists, discuss the prevalence and causes of ED, and review both the psychological and medical aspects of treatment for ED. By the end of the workshop, psychiatrists will have the knowledge and tools to comfortably discuss ED and present treatment options with patients.
Learning Objectives:
After attending this session, participants should be able to:
-
Summarize the medical causes of ED, generate a differential diagnosis and review medical treatment options with patients.
-
Describe the psychological approach to ED and psychotherapeutic options for treatment.
